I have heard that the Denver group had agreements from both Vail and Steamboat to host the alpine events.
The issue of finances were also primary in the bid from Lake Placid for the 1980 winter games. At least most of the venues were close to Lake Placid not the 100 and 150 miles from Denver to Vail and Steamboat.

Hello Greg,
Beaver Creek – which was going to be built for the Alpine events. Bachelor Gulch (the newest part of Beaver Creek) was where the ski jump was to be held!
After moving from Stowe to Colorado (in 2010), we were hosts at Beaver Creek for 3 years and did tours. This was part of our explanation as to why Beaver Creek was so new. And why Colorado decided not to host the Olympics.
