I have written previously about the impact stretch pants had on skiing. In the 1960s they made skiing fashionable and became an integral part of the skiing “uniform”. There were other warmer alternatives, but many of us felt that we skied better in stretch pants – and definitely looked better! Starting with the 1970s function began to win out over fashion and stretch pants gradually disappeared from the slopes (except for racers.) I do notice stretch pants are now making a reappearance for which some of us are thankful. But what triggered that original change that led to most of us giving up our stretch pants?
In my opinion it was the “Super Pant”! The “Super Pant” was insulated warm-up pants that zipped on over stretch pants. Racers loved them and the general skier population followed suit.
The “Super Pant” began in 1969 right here in Vermont as the brainchild of Charles Bird Vaughan, better known as C.B. Vaughan. C.B. and his then-wife Roxanne designed the pants and literally drove around Vermont selling them out of their car. This was the beginning of CB Sports, a name that would dominate the skiwear business through the 1970s and 80s.
C.B. Vaughan grew up in Manchester, Vermont, where his parents ran an inn. He loved to ski and he loved to ski fast. His racing for Vermont Academy earned C.B. a scholarship to Saint Lawrence University where he would become captain of the ski team and a member of the United States Ski Team. While skiing collegiately C.B. would meet another college ski racer that liked to go fast, Dick Dorworth. Together they trained for the 1963 world speed skiing competition held in Portillo, Chile. Both men would set a new record of 106.5 miles-per-hour!
Former Stowe-ite Tony Thompson was the only correct responder this week. He now lives out-of-state and gets the Stowe Reporter by mail. He also pointed out that C.B. Vaughan’s first wife was Roxanne McCormick whose family had a place on Cottage Club Road here in Stowe.
Despite setting the world speed skiing record, C.B. Vaughan was not named to the 1964 U.S. Olympic Team. So he moved his racing to the European pro circuit where he would race for money. By 1969 C.B.’s racing career was on the wane, but he wanted to stay in the skiing business. He saw an opportunity in skiwear. In his own words:
”Skiing was very chi-chi, and chic was not appealing to me. I was interested in bringing hard-core, traditional, classic, functional skiwear into the marketplace. I couldn’t accept that just because I was a kid from Vermont, I couldn’t do it.”
From the “Super Pant”, CB Sports skiwear would diversify to include parkas, vests, shells, and additional pant styles. These featured common sense innovations such as synthetic zippers, Velcro closures, and high collars – all very popular in cold weather locales such as Vermont. But it wasn’t just function with CB skiwear, it also had a certain fashion. The skiwear was available in a wide range of colors that assured you could be an individual even if there were a lot of CB Sports on the slopes.
Initially C.B. designed the clothes and had them made by other companies, but soon those other companies began to steal his ideas. So C.B. decided to manufacture the clothing himself and the first CB Sports plant was located in an old mill in Bennington. At its peak CB Sports had four manufacturing plants in Vermont and New York employing about 500 people.
The late 1980s brought economic pressures that forced C.B. Vaughan to relinquish control of the company. The CB Sports name would continue under different ownership, but only as retail outlets since the manufacturing units were liquidated. In 2008 the last two retail outlets closed including the one in Bennington.
C.B. Vaughan was inducted into the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2013. In his remarks it certainly sounded like he has regained control of the CB Sports name and plans a comeback. An Internet search yielded a CB Sports line of parkas in 2011, but nothing currently in skiwear. For now you’ll have to settle for some vintage CB Sports skiwear in the Slope Style exhibit at the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum.

I worked in Jeffersonville, VT. at The Sugglers Notch Inn, right out of college. EVryone wore CB Sports ski wear. I would like to see them come back to VT if the corporate income tax rate drops so they can afford to keep manufacturing in USA.

I still have my 1969 CB Sports race jacket from when I was racing coach at Belleayre Mtn. It is in great condition !

I had a 1981 blue cb Apollo down ski jacket that was made of nylon on the outside and I think it had a taffeta lining. It was very comfortable to ski in. Also had the CB stretch pants that were also form fitting and comfy.
In 1987 I bought a CB goretex insulated jacket from the Saratoga Springs store that was great also. It was 2-tone blue with orange acces and not only looked great but the fit, freedom of movement and warmth beat anything I’ve seen since. I wish I could buy these 2 jackets today

I still have & wear 2 CB jackets. One is black with green & royal soft interior. One is light blue with red accents & vinyl navy interior. My in laws worked at home for CB, in the 70s, poking out jacket corners, zippers, etc. A CB comeback would be awesome!

In the 80s I used to purchase CB Sports seconds at the CB Sports store in downtown Glens Falls, NY. I had three children 6 years apart so we passed down the jackets from one to the other. These colorful ski jackets kept them warm and stylish for many years. Thank you C.B. Vaughn.

I knew C.B. when he was at St. Lawrence. He and I had perfect-attendance during the winter of ’60-’61 at the South Colton ski hill that the college owned. I couldn’t keep up because he loved going straight down the hill. Two decades later, we met up again in Telluride, when he attended a couple of our summertime blue-grass festivals.

Interesting history-I have ski films of CB taken at Stratton during the winter of 64-65. All on old 8 mm film- they were on the old north American center trail next to the suntanner lift and on the trail just to left called the upper tamarack I believe. Getting old now but Stratton in the early 60’s only cost $5.50 for a day ticket and there was only one lift to the top. I recall the watering hole called the Five fly’s was a popular nite place for evening entertainment after hours and operator of Stratton CEO was Midge “McCouphlin” or close to correct spelling. Emo Heinreich was ski school director

Had and loved two of those. Wore one or the other practically every day all six years of jr. high/high school. Wish I had them still. Still have a red, puffy ski parka with royal blue piping. 35+ years and still super warm. Not a thing wrong with it.

I received a CB sports ski parka (tan with blue trim) as a gift in 1977. It still looks good, so much so, that my sixteen year old has claimed it. I cannot say enough about the excellent quality of this coat.

My wife and I were on vacation in Maine in 1990 and I picked up a CB ski jacket at one of the outlet stores, the jacket was on clearance. My jacket has a yellow shell with pink inner neck, pink and purple stripes on the sleeves and came with a purple outer vest, metal zipper. This is the best jacket that I have ever owned and is still going strong. I wish I could get another.

I have a red down 1984 jacket and blue goretex side zip pants that I still wear at 54 years old. I’ve tried to find other outerwear that I LOVE but nothing compares to quality and construction.
Still looks amazing, even if faded. I scour vintage stores for CB gear.

I worked for CB Sports in the Glens Falls office and had the best ski gloves and jackets. Unfortunately I sold them when I moved temporarily to Florida. Wish I still had them now.

CB Sports purchased my family’s factory in Salem, NY in the late 70’s. My Dad was plant manager there until he moved to Glens Falls until he retired a few years before the GF plant closed. I worked part time at the Salem plant in high school sweeping and doing maintenance work.
There was no better ski wear than CB Sports and I went through a lot of jackets throughout my high school and college years. I sure wish I still had my favorite blue Apollo jacket. That was the best coat I ever owned.
I’m happy to see so many people still recognize the brand for the quality product it was. I know the people who ran the company and worked in the plants were very proud of the clothing they made.

I worked for CB Sports in 1985 or 1986, my job was to deliver fabric from the warehouse in Bennington to the manufacturing factories, I have been in the Salem factory several times,. The people in Salem were very friendly, I don’t know why I came to this website but I’m glad I did. It was interesting hearing the stories of CB,

In 1985 I stopped at Shaw’s in Stowe, after a day of skiing, and fell head over teakettle in love with a bright red, down CB Sports parka. It reminded me of the parkas worn by Stowe ski instructors in the early 1960s. The parka is still as good as new! It still seems stylish to me, though a millennial might not agree!

I was (am!) a CB fanatic. Like many here, still have several pieces of clothing including two winter coats and two shells. I have a corduroy hat too stretched out to wear. I have a two piece parka from the mid-90s (fleece and shell). I used to have 4 or 5 CB t-shirts which sadly just deteriorated. I still have my navy blue gloves with CB stitched on the outside. The brand was my 80s childhood and I miss it dearly.

We nt to college with him. He was fearless. Glad to hear he is still around.

It was a big expense back in college days to buy CB. But I bought a navy blue corduroy, high collared jacket and matching grey racing ski pants. Still have them hoping my grandkids might want/fit in them at waist size 30 somethin:). Great quality and I’ve outfitted myself recently with CB from e-bay, posh online sources. Be careful as there are alot of ‘off brand’ CB stuff out there – look for the tags that say ‘made in USA’ and ask for sizing in inches – alot of the sizing on CB stuff out there is off. But quality is still good if you buy the orginal stuff!! Great to read of so many like minded skiers/CB fans!.
