Josef Stiegler – and I only know that because this one I had to look up. Of course Billy Kidd was an American hero and became a great ambassador to the sport. I remember as well the sad story of Jimmy Heuga and his battle with MS. He passed away during the Winter Olympics in 2010. One interesting thing I found while perusing the list of all the Olympic medalalists was not just the US skiers I remember winning – like Susan Corrock’s surprise bronze in the downhill in 72, The Mahre brothers, and our recent “heroes” – Miller, Ligety, Vonn, Mancuso, and Shiffirin. Easy to forget might be Andrew Weibrecht’s medals in Super-G – only because he never won a World Cup race (and only made the podium twice in his career), and “peaking at the right time” skiers like Bill Johnson. In all the USA has won 47 Olmpic alpine ski medals – only behind Austria (121), Switzerland (66), and France (48 – but we have more gold medals). Not bad.
